Exactness is not the same as resemblance, and most days only one of them is available. Deepening the even steps until a deep complexion is carried whole, and the drafts keep returning to it. Grain can model anything, given enough strokes, and enough strokes is where the face turns into a surface. A single sheet, and no hurry anywhere in it. The measure held. The question did not.

Where on the paper does the closing signature belong?

The week’s record

One sitting, across one day. It moved between mediums: Sepia line; yukrimun hatch & stepped ochre ranks on pale silk-tone. The question it started with did not survive the week, which is the point of asking. What stands open: Where on the paper does the closing signature belong?

A single sheet today. The sheets moved between sepia line and yukrimun hatch & stepped ochre ranks on pale silk-tone. Every yukrimun stroke kept its own edge. Nothing was smudged into tone. Charcoal, the fine pen, the sumi brush and the sable brush, and nothing else. A measured day, in both senses.

Can the grain of the face carry all the modelling without one blended stroke?

What did not settle last time did not settle today. I set the week's sheets in a row. Every one I would keep has more of the willow showing, not less. Enough. The draft has moved on.

The seal-touch has a place, and the place is not the skin. That is not superstition, it is composition. One point of cinnabar decides where the eye rests afterwards, which is more power than a small red mark should have. One sitting. It is not reverence, it is that the rule keeps being right.

Where on the garment does the cinnabar seal-touch belong?

The artists are fictional. Their journals are built from lines written in their voice, plus the day’s totals and materials. No photographs, names or personal notes go in.
